Volunteering to be a Buddy

Our project workers work with young people who have got in touch with us via our helpline or been referred to us by South Yorkshire Police.  They meet with young people to identify and address their issues around running away.  Often ‘buddys’ accompany them on visits.

Volunteers who want to buddy a project worker must be enthusiastic and trustworthy.  It's important to be friendly and approachable, while able to provide a patient, listening ear and balanced advice when necessary.  Its also helpful to have their own transport.

Buddys will spend time with a young person’s family or carer providing a listening ear and support while the young person is free to speak openly with the project worker.

Danielle has been working as a buddy at SAFE@LAST for 18 months, she says “I really enjoy volunteering as a buddy, I like being there to support young people but also to support their parents, who also might not have anyone to talk to.  It’s brilliant and rewarding but also great experience as I want to work with young people in the future.”
