Volunteering for the Helpline

It’s a dark, cold, winters night.  Sam is on the streets.  Sam has no where safe to stay tonight, no one to ask for help and no money.  Its been hours since Sam had something to eat.  Sam is scared and alone.  Oh, and one more thing—Sam is only 12.  Not a pretty picture, but with over 80,000 young people running away from home in the UK every year and 4000 of these in South Yorkshire, its not uncommon either.

Sam picks up the phone and dials….ring ring…..ring ring….ring ring…..

Could you be the person to answer that call?

SAFE@LAST runs a 24 hour helpline for young people who have run away from home or are thinking of doing so.  For many children and young people who have no one to turn to, picking up the phone is the only option they have.  SAFE@LAST’s helpline is manned completely by volunteers who listen and support young callers at any time of the day or night.

Listening to such heart wrenching stories can take its toll on your emotions so we offer thorough training before you start taking calls as well as ongoing training and support.

We organize our volunteers around 3 1/2 hour shifts and would ask you to commit to at least three a month including one weekend shift.

We need volunteers weekdays 6.00pm—9.00pm

Weekends 2.00-5.30pm and 5.30-9.00pm

If you feel that this type of work is for you, download and print the application form

Send the completed form to:
