What is the SAFEplace Appeal?

The SAFEplace Appeal is raising £100,000 to support the provision of refuge for young runaways in this region.

The SAFEplace Appeal will ensure that we have the resources available to provide young people with intensive support to fit their needs.  This will focus on assisting them to make positive changes in their lives and accessing long term, safe and appropriate accommodation so that they do not run again.

What is Refuge?

Refuge for young runaways is SAFE, CONFIDENTIAL accommodation for children and young people who are at risk from where they are running FROM or where they are running TO.  Young people access refuge directly; they do not have to be referred by another agency.

Why is refuge needed?

SAFE@Last currently works with young people who access our services

through the Helpline, our work in schools or the MISPER (Missing

Persons) scheme.

• We can and do prevent children and young people from becoming

vulnerable through running away

• We can and do support many young people to return home

But we know that children and young people, some younger than 11 years

old are in danger, without money, food or a warm, safe place to shelter. For some young people, running away seems to be the best available choice within a much too limited set of options.

Every day in our region young people are replacing one set of fears in a familiar environment with a different set of fears on the street and leaving themselves open to the most despicable sources of abuse and exploitation.

We must take on board the urgent need to protect these children and to ensure that young runaways are free from exploitation and are safe from harm.
