SAFE@LAST is a charity working with and on behalf of children and young people at risk through running away

SAFE@LAST was established in June 2000 in response to an acute need for services for the one in nine children under 16 years  who run away or are forced to leave home every year in South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North East Derbyshire.

We run a free helpline service, 0800 335 SAFE , every day of the week. The helpline is operated by trained volunteers, and supported by a professional early response and ongoing support service which is aimed at ensuring immediate safety, and supporting a young person’s return to home or a place of care. We also take referrals from other agencies and helplines. Click here to find out about how you can become a trained volunteer for the Runaways Helpline.

SAFE@LAST also provides a MISPER (Missing Persons) scheme for young runaways who are reported missing to the police, and subsequently returned home. This is currently working well within the Rotherham and Doncaster Divisions of South Yorkshire Police and we hope in the future to expand the scheme into Barnsley and Sheffield. The aim of the MISPER scheme is to give young people the chance to talk to an independent person about the reasons that led to them running away and what help and support they would need in order to prevent re-occurrence of running. We offer each young person the chance of a confidential visit to explain our service and how we work. Click here to find out more about this scheme.

As part of our preventative work we have distributed our leaflets and information to most of the senior schools in South Yorkshire, Worksop and Chesterfield and we provide workshops as a support to the PHSE curriculum. The workshops encourage young people, usually Year 9 students to think carefully about the risk and dangers of running away

SAFE@Last is proud to announce that it has now opened refuge.  A safe place were young people meeting a strict criteria can stay while alternative accomodation is arranged - click here to find out more about the SAFEplace refuge.
