Referrals to SAFE@LAST
We know that the issues of running away equally affect young people from every section of our society and every geographical area of the country. From recent research we also know that only 1 in 8 of the large numbers of children in this extremely marginalised group actually accesses help from professionals.
Any statutory or voluntary agency, organisation or individual can refer young people to SAFE@LAST.
Referral Process
2. Organisations and individuals complete the referral form and send it to us via mail, fax or email.
3. SAFE@LAST will then contact the young person to arrange an initial meeting, to see how the young person can be supported best.
Please note: it is always a good idea to call the Project Team on 01909 566977 to talk through the referral and to let us know to expect it before completing it.
Young people referred to SAFE@LAST must be
16 and under
Live in South Yorkshire
Be at risk of running away or being thrown out.
It is important to note you do not have to wait for the young person to run away, you can refer to us as soon as YOU become concerned that they are at risk of running away - we can, and do, help to PREVENT running.

Our most common referring organisations are
South Yorkshire Police
The SAFE@LAST MISsing PERsons scheme takes referrals in the first instance from South Yorkshire Police. Every young person who is reported missing to South Yorkshire Police by the people they live with and then returns or is returned is referred to us by the Division Missing from Home Officer. This includes Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield.
The SAFE@LAST Project Worker then visits the young person in their home with the people they live with to talk about the recent missing episode. During the visit the Project Worker listens to the young person and then, if appropriate offers further contact to give support around the issues arising from running away for that young person. This involves 1:1 work, signposting on to more specialist workers and partnership working with organisations.
Children and Young People's Services/ Schools/ Youth Clubs
If any Staff become aware of a young person at risk through running away they can refer that young person to us for additional ongoing support. It is important that Staff have spoken with young people about the referral and have their agreement to make it.
